Nicotine Residues in Wild Mushrooms: Further Developments

Information Update 10/2009 advised that nicotine had been found in dried wild mushrooms at levels exceeding the default Maximum Residue Level (MRL) for pesticides set under EC Regulation 396/2005. On the basis of advice from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) the European Commission set guideline temporary limits for nicotine levels in fresh and dried wild mushrooms (0.04 mg/kg in fresh wild mushrooms, 1.2 mg/kg in dried wild mushrooms other than ceps, 2.3 mg/kg in wild dried ceps). As a precautionary step the Commission stated that produce containing nicotine above these levels “should not be placed on the market and be withdrawn from the market and safely disposed of”.
