There are some 40,000 ha of raised bogs  in England , unfortunately 99% of these are degraded mostly because of past agriculture and forestry . There are 51.5 million hectares of bogs in Europe as a whole (raised and blanket bogs) . There are many large and wonderful raised bogs in Germany and Ireland safeguarded as nature reserves.  There are  even larger areas of pristine  bog in Canada, USA and Siberia.
